Alternate Fuel Transportation

The Carolinas is experiencing the rise of electric and natural gas fueled vehicles along with the rest of the U.S., but additionally the Carolinas has unique opportunities with regard to hydrogen and bio-fuel. The Carolinas represents one of the top five clusters of companies and organizations with a hydrogen and fuel cell interest in the U.S. This is due to South Carolinas’ early investment in research by Savannah River National Laboratory and the University of South Carolina. The Carolinas are also a significant center for bio-fuel and waste to energy production.

Companies and organizations in this cluster include electric, hydrogen, natural gas, bio-fuel and other non-petroleum vehicle manufacturers, their supply chain members, fuel providers, universities and institutes engaged in research supporting this technology, organizations training skilled workers for the cluster and financial, legal, accounting and strategic service providers to these companies.

E4 Carolinas is managing a U.S. Department of Energy funded 2020 through 2022 alternative fuel vehicles research and planning project focused on creating storm and infrastructure disruption resilience and recovery. E4 Carolinas will facilitate growth of the Energy Storage Cluster through inventorying and mapping, cluster member engagement, creation of a plan to apply cluster assets to new opportunity and plan implementation to attract companies, start new companies and grow existing companies which are cluster members
