Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance

The Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance

With the increasing use and demand for hydrogen-based technologies in the region, the Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance has teamed with E4 Carolinas to drive further commercialization of hydrogen and related technologies in the Southeastern United States.

Today, the focus of many companies is sustainable, efficient clean energy and a major part of that conversation is an increased commercial use and renewed interest in hydrogen and related applications such as power generation, over and off road vehicles, rail, air and maritime. With the Energy Innovation, a nonpartisan climate policy think tank, by use of its Energy Policy Simulator model predicts hydrogen becoming a “major part of the U.S. energy mix, earning revenue of $130-170 billion per year by 2050 while lowering greenhouse gas emissions by 120 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent annually.” With the advent of new policies such as the Infrastructure Law of 2021 and the Inflation Reduction Law of 2022, the rate of adoption of hydrogen in the energy sectors is expected to increase even further. Siemens, Mitsubishi and GE, natural gas power generation equipment manufacturers in the region, are developing technologies which use a blend of hydrogen and natural gas. Bosch, Siemens and Hyundai are developing hydrogen fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies in the region.  Innovative “green” hydrogen applications continue to emerge and hydrogen as an energy storage medium is being developed and actively deployed in our region.

The Alliance will serve as the regional connector for companies and organizations surrounding hydrogen energy opportunities  while also being a resource to inform regional stakeholders on the benefits and opportunities of hydrogen technologies through seminars, workshops and events.  The Alliance supports and advise E4 Carolinas in conducting a regional inventory of the hydrogen energy assets and activities in the Southeastern U.S. and will collaborate in creating a plan for regional hydrogen development and deployment.

SHEA Vision: A Decarbonized Southeast Manufacturing, Logistical and Power Sectors enabled by Low Cost Green Hydrogen supported by a Robust Green Hydrogen Industrial Supply Chain.

SHEA Mission: SHEA’s mission is to convene, educate and engage stakeholders and communities, providing outreach, education and networking opportunties to facilitate the adoption of hydrogen technologies throughout the southeast to achieve a zero carbon society

About E4 Carolinas

E4 Carolinas, organized in 2012, is the trade association for Carolina energy companies and organizations. With 140 members and offices in Columbia, Charlotte and Raleigh, it serves members in the areas of energy economic development, innovation, talent development, policy information and communications.

About the Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance

The Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance grew from the initial activities of the SC Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Alliance formed in 2006 to promote already active hydrogen and fuel cell research and development in the state of SC. The Alliance is a nonprofit collaborative partnership of government, business, academia and citizens working together to advance the commercialization of hydrogen technologies to enable regional and national economic benefit, energy security and a decarbonized future through low cost green hydrogen supported by a robust green hydrogen industrial supply chain . Rebranding to the Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance took place in January 2020. Its Board of Directors members are:

  • Scott McWhorter (Board Chair, CEO, Joule Consulting)
  • Ted Motyka (Board Secretary and Treasurer) ,Consultant, Greenway Energy
  • Thomas Koeppe, Business Development Manager, Siemens Energy
  • John Ledbetter, President, Summit Worx
  • Shawn Rossignol,  Sr. Construction Manager, Strategic Real Estate Partners
  • Geovanni Castano, Innovation Technology & Startups Consultant, Dominion Energy
  • Darrell Scott, Senior Director, Legislative & Regulatory Affairs, NextEra Energy Resources LLC
  • Kevin Huang, Professor, SmartState Endowed Chair and Director, Center for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, University of South Carolina

Events

3/1/23 This webinar will introduce companies and other organizations in the region to the U.S. Commercial Service, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, that offers companies a full range of expertise in international trade. The webinar will focus on global opportunities for regional companies to develop new export businesses or new business partnership opportunities with groups from abroad in green hydrogen, using a discussion of example markets and activities in South Africa and Poland.
